Choosing the Right Toll Class

In Slovenia, there are various toll classes, which are determined by the size of the vehicles. Here's how these classes are structured:

• Toll class 1: Includes motorcycles and scooters. The crucial factor is whether they are single-track, i.e., all their wheels are aligned in a row.
• Toll class 2A: Covers all ordinary cars. There are two requirements for this class: First, the permissible total weight must not exceed 3.5 tons. Second, the height at the front axle must not exceed 1.3 meters. Larger SUVs and minivans also fall into this class if they meet these two requirements.
• Toll class 2B: Larger vehicles that do not meet the requirements of class 2A, but are not heavy vehicles, are assigned class 2B. These include, for example, vans and delivery vehicles.
• Heavy vehicles: For anything too big and heavy for class 2B, the "normal" toll is not enough. This applies, for example, to trucks and motorhomes. In these cases, you must use the DarsGo transponder, which is also available online. The costs are then calculated based on the kilometers driven, the number of axles, and the Euro emission class.

Cost of the Vignette in Slovenia

Validity Duration of the E-Vignette

In Slovenia, you can purchase the E-Vignette for three different periods: 7 days, one month, or one year. For the toll class, there is a special feature here. Instead of a monthly vignette, a 6-month vignette is available.

You can pre-date the vignette by up to one month. This way, you can prepare well in advance of your trip. An important innovation is the annual pass. It is no longer tied to a calendar year. Instead, it is valid for 12 consecutive months.

But be careful: The vignette is valid from the first day. So if you plan a trip from Friday to the next Friday, that totals 8 days.

Penalty for Driving Without a Vignette

Those who fail to comply with the vignette requirement for highways and expressways face fines ranging from 300 € to 800 €. The amount depends on how long you have been driving on a toll road without a vignette and what type of vehicle you are driving. Repeat offenders, who have been caught without a vignette in the last 24 months, are often fined even more.

Enforcement is conducted through vehicles as well as fixed cameras. Here, one should not hope for lax controls. In Slovenia, the police are strict about such violations.

Those who are unable to pay or unwilling to do so must expect their driver's license to be confiscated until the fine is paid. Compared to these - quite hefty - penalties, the cost of the vignette is a bargain.

Good to know: The E-Vignette is valid only for a specific vehicle, not for you personally! Changing cars during your trip to Slovenia without buying an additional vignette is therefore not possible.

Can You Circumvent the Highways in Slovenia?

We advise against it. Not only are the alternatives often poorly signposted, but it also simply takes much longer. Additionally, many areas in the immediate vicinity of the highways are also toll-charged. This applies, for example, to roundabouts. Especially in these border areas, the police are particularly vigilant and can impose fines. It doesn't matter whether you accidentally enter such an area - you will still have to pay.
